Nancy Drew is my favorite detective after Sherlock Holmes. Carolyn Keene’s series of mysteries are full of delightful suspense; you can never be bored.
The Mystery of the Fire Dragon is number 38 of the prolific Nancy Drew series. Nancy and her friends hunt down clues to discover and put an end to a gang of smugglers who are illegally importing stolen gold from Hong Kong into the U.S. and to rescue their kidnapped Chinese friend, Chi Che Soong.
Nancy, Bess, and George are urgently called to New York to visit Nancy’s Aunt Eloise who has a new mystery awaiting them. Aunt Eloise’s close friends, Grandpa Soong and his granddaughter Chi Che Soong were victimized by a vicious gang of smugglers because Chi Che knew too much about their illegal smuggling racket.
The gang continually tries to frighten the girls with empty threats and cheap tactics. The girls, however, aren’t deterred because they know Chi Che is depending on them to save her.
After traveling to Hong Kong, Nancy discovers some vital clues and figures out that the thugs are cleverly concealing stolen gold in the ivory Mahjong pieces. Nancy is kidnapped by members of the gang and she is tied up inside a private jet heading to Taipei. Though it appears hopeless, Nancy manages to think on her feet and escapes. Eventually the gang is caught by Nancy and the police. Chi Che Soong is rescued and justice is served.
Nancy Drew is an inspirational female character who shows great courage, boundless intellect, and the ability to think quickly on her feet. She has incredible deduction and observation skills.
