The Magician’s Nephew is the first book in The Chronicles of Narnia. The Chronicles of Narnia is a book series by C.S. Lewis that tells of the history of Narnia from the day of its birth to the last battle and the end of Narnia. The first book, The Magician’s Nephew, explains the beginning of the land of Narnia and its inhabitants.
Digory Ketterly and Polly Plummer reside in London. They are neighbors and become acquaintances during the summer. When exploring the rafters they stumble into Uncle Andrew’s forbidden study. Uncle Andrew is Digory’s uncle. He has come into possession of an ancient magic from he lost city of Atlantis. His magic has he power to transport you to different worlds.
Digory and Polly are tricked into becoming lab rats for a dangerous experiment of Uncle Andrew. Soon, they are whisked out of their world into the “Wood Between the Worlds”, a sleepy, unchanging place. Through this intersection they are able to explore many pools; each leading to a different world somewhere in another universe or dimension. On first trying it they are whisked away to Charn. Charn is one of those older worlds having gone more astray to the truth through the years. It has been a sinful world and everything living has been destroyed years ago by the deplorable word which was spoken by Jadis, the last empress of Charn and an evil witch, during the last battle of Charn. Through the enchantment which comes with the deplorable word being spoken the speaker is also under a spell. Digory, much to the horror of Polly, rings a bell to break the spell and awakes Jadis. She insists on coming into the young planet earth to take over in tyranny. She forces her way in. Trouble ensues in London when Jadis goes mad and turns people into her slaves.
Digory and Polly manage to bring Jadis back to the woodsy intersection and accidentally take along the cabby, his horse(Strawberry), and Uncle Andrew. They all hop into one of the pools and find themselves in what is the beginning of Narnia. Digory, Polly, the cabby, his horse(Strawberry),Uncle Andrew, and Jadis the evil witch witness the founding of Narnia by the Great Lion, Aslan. Through his ‘Song of Life’ birds and beasts emerge from the land. Even though Narnia is but 7 hours old evil has already been brought into it on the day of its birth by the race of Adam and Eve.
Determined to fix his mistake Digory, along with Polly and Fledge, sets off on a perilous journey commissioned by Aslan. They fly off to the enchanted garden where Digory fights a hard battle between saving his dying mother or trusting Aslan for the best. In the end he overcomes temptation and returns with the apple which is carefully sown to protect Narnia for many years from the great evil which has already come upon it.
In the end Digory and Polly return home and Digory saves his mother and plans the apple core. Years later an apple tree grows and never forgets its Narnian descent. When Digory, much older, uses the wood to construct a wardrobe he never discovers its power and connection to Narnia, but years later a little girl by the name of Lucy does and Adam’s race finds its way to Narnia again in “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”.
