The BFG is one of my favorite books in the whole wide world, without exaggeration. (I love it so much!) If you have not read this “scrumdiddlyumtious” book by Roald Dahl, you must! After reading this review, I encourage you to head to your local library to check out a copy of the BFG.

The BFG is a perfectly scrumptious book. It is hilarious, creative and altogether a masterpiece of Roald Dahl.

So for someone who has no idea about this book, what does BFG stand for? BFG stands for Big, Friendly Giant.

We imagine giants as gargantuan, scary beasts. In the BFG, there are plenty of those. Their names are Fleshlumpeater, Bonecruncher, Manhugger, Childchewer, Meatdripper, Gizzardgulper, Maidmasher, Bloodbottler, and Butcher Boy. They live in the secret realm of the giants. Every night all the giants gallop off to different parts of the world to guzzle and gulp juicy “human beans.”

But there is another giant, an oddball named the BFG. He may be a giant but couldn’t be more different from the other gruesome beasts. He isn’t in the least interested in munching on human beans. No, the BFG is a dreamcatcher. He literally catches good dreams and blows them to children through their windows in the dead of night.

One night, an orphan girl named Sophie wakes up during the witching hour. She sees the BFG blowing wonderful, happy dreams into children’s windows. The BFG sees Sophie. She is kidnapped by the BFG, lest she should tell the whole world that she saw a giant.

To her surprise, Sophie finds that the BFG is very friendly and quite safe. He has to survive on repulsive snozzcumbers because he refuses to eat human beans. She is delighted with the Big Friendly Giant’s funny speech and fascinated with his enormous ears. The BFG can hear many wonderful and interesting things with his fantastic ears. He hears the movements of the invisible dreams that he catches. He can hear the gentle moans and piercing screams of trees being cut down or flowers being plucked. The BFG can even hear the footsteps of a ladybug walking across a leaf halfway across the world.

Sophie learns about Frobscottle and Whizzpoppers. Frobscottle is a delicious, fizzy, frothy drink existing only in Giantland. It is like the soda in our world except the fizzy bubbles float downwards instead of upwards. And that leads to Whizzpoppers. When we drink something fizzy like Coke, for example, the carbon dioxide bubbles upwards to the surface of the Coke. So when we drink it we, um… burp because the bubbles rise upwards in our tummies. In Frobscottle the bubbles go down resulting in Whizzpoppers. I think everyone can figure out what that means. 🙂 But in Giantland Whizzpoppers are not considered rude at all. On the contrary, they are beheld as a wondrous and beautiful music.

When Sophie learns about the other giants and their loathsome habit of eating people, she is determined to save the victims from becoming dinner. Sophie and the BFG join forces in an unforgettable adventure to save the humans and punish the giants.

The BFG is honorable, kind, gentle, and not to mention funny! The other giants bully the BFG because he is much smaller than them and he stands out. The BFG stands strong in his belief to not eat humans even though he is bullied for it.

Sophie is a courageous and confident character. She teaches us that we can make a difference and stand up for ourselves and others no matter how big or small.

This is book is filled with delightful humor.
