“Brrring!!! Brrring!!! BRRRING!!!” Kassiopeia’s super sparkly, pink alarm clock awoke the SCUA girls on Christmas day. “Yahoo!” Adira shouted. The girls jumped out of bed. They ran down the stairs as fast as they could to open their gifts.

Mr. Cuddles, Fluffy, and Fuzzy J. were already awake. The mischievous pets were chewing wrapping paper and nosing around the gifts in an attempt to uncover the contents of the surprise. Agents Wee and Eight stood in their pajamas smiling at the girls. Quick greetings and hugs were exchanged. Adira, Auristela, and Kassiopeia hurried to open their gifts. They each grabbed a box and began to tear it open while Agents Wee and Eight took pictures. The girls’ faces were lit up with delight and curiosity as they tore open the boxes. Kassiopeia peered inside the first box to see what wonderful gift awaited.

Vegetables! Vegetables were inside! They smelled like Fuzzy J.’s fart and were moldy! Kassiopeia’s eyes popped out. “Whaaat!!” she shrieked in shock. Seeing the rest of her family staring at her, she diplomatically responded, “These are so, um… (with hesitation in her voice) amazing. Thank you so much for these vegetables, Mom and Dad!”

Adira and Kassiopeia opened their gifts to find the same unpleasant surprise. Adira inquired with frankness in her tone, “Mom, Dad, why did you give us vegetables?” Wee, Eight denounced that these gifts were their’s. The agents were vexed. The girls opened the rest of their presents. Every box was filled with vegetables! And they weren’t even fresh! Even their stockings were stuffed with veggie sticks.

Auristela, furious, shouted and shook her fist in the air. “I don’t know who did this but how dare they ruin our Christmas!” Kassiopeia was nearly in tears, by now. Adira firmly asserted, “Crying won’t help, Kassiopeia! We’ve got to solve this mystery! I’m determined to find and punish the culprit!”
