Singapore Series | Day 2 | The World in All it’s Tasty Glory | Tuesday, March 29

This morning I woke up at four in the morning! I think my plans for adjusting to the time zone just went out of the window. I remembered with glee that the following day I had taken a nap in the afternoon and I couldn’t recall waking up again. That meant that I hadn’t brushed my teeth last night!

At about 7am, we realized we were hungry. Like, REALLY hungry. So we Yelped for a bakery. The closest one was called Q Bread. It was at the Aljunied metro station.

We went and bought some twisted donuts. It’s like a churro, but light and fluffy and sugar-coated. All around DE-LI-CIOUS! We also bought some coconut buns. They are like Hawaiian buns and on the inside there is a scrumptious mix of coconut and brown sugar.

While munching on our donuts, we took a walk around the side of the station. There we discovered a myriad of cafes, restaurants, and bakeries. We went into a hole-in-the-wall shop. The aroma of delicious food wafted through the air.

We bought some savory pancakes filled with leeks and egg. They were SOOOO good! We went back to buy more! Yesterday I had walked out from lunch being ambivalent about Singaporean food. Today I truly felt the world in all it’s tasty glory. Plus, I was hungry.

That evening, I took a nap; or, at least, it was supposed to be one. But I fell asleep until 10 o’clock at night. My mom had bought tickets to Gardens by the Bay at the airport. She didn’t want to waste the tickets. So she tried to wake me up using multiple tactics:

  1. Threats. Tickling or taking away privileges like candy or books. But I was still deep asleep.
  2. Pleading. She pleaded with me using logic. I was immune to this also. It was kind of funny because she kept switching between threatening me and pleading with me.
  3. Bribes. Like chocolate and creme brûlée. I knew she couldn’t and wouldn’t eat it all by herself. Besides, I wasn’t in the habit of eating in the middle of the night.
  4. Noise. Turning on the TV with her Korean drama really loud. I ignored it, but could hear the suspenseful music.
  5. Turning on the light. Even though it was pretty bright, I just turned to the side and closed my eyes.
  6. Shaking. My mom tried shaking me or tickling by turns while pleading or threatening me.

I could tell my mom was getting desperate. But her whole behavior was pretty funny. So I decided to humor her by getting up. I roused myself and got dressed to go. By the time my whole family was ready and out of the house, it was already midnight.

We took a taxi to Gardens by the Bay, which didn’t close until 2 in the morning. When we got there we discovered that you only needed tickets to get inside the indoor exhibits, but those were already closed.

We enjoyed the outdoor exhibits, using a flashlight app because it was too dark. The manmade trees sparkled and shone in the dark. Gardens by the Bay is a must see, but you don’t have to buy tickets to tour the outside gardens.

We were a little disappointed that we couldn’t use our tickets but decided to come back tomorrow without my dad, who would be in a meeting.

Tune in for more adventures.
